Toaru Majutsu no Index ~ LN review.
Magic. Alchemy. Espers. Humans. Science. Mix these together and you get " Toaru Majutsu no Index (a certain magical index)".
* Story Synopsis
Toaru Majutsu no Index is set in Academy City; a technologically advanced academic city located in western Tokyo which studies scientifically enhanced superhuman students known as espers who develop powers. However, within this world of scientifically developed superpowers exists an underground world of magic and occult connected to the religious institutions of the world.
Kamijou Touma, an unlucky boy who happens to be one of the many students within Academy City, possesses a mysterious power in his right hand known as the 'Imagine Breaker'; an ability which allows him to negate all forms of supernatural powers, whether they are magical or psychic. One day, he finds a young girl hanging on his balcony railing named Index. She is a nun from Necessarius, a secret magic branch of the Anglican Church, and her mind has been implanted with the Index Librorum Prohibitorum: 103,000 original grimoires that the Church has removed from circulation. Their encounter leads him to meet others from the secretive worlds of science and magic.
Kamijou Touma's unusual power places him at the center of conflicts related to both science-based espers in Academy City and magicians. As Kamijou Touma tries to help and protect his friends, he learns that the people he knows are not as they appear and begins to attract the attention of magicians and espers alike as they try to unravel the secrets of Academy City and Index.
The name mentions Index, but the story revolves around touma. Who can negate any supernatural ability with his right hand, even miracles of god.
* Pro's : The story has strong & vivid set of characters. The world in the novel is looked by touma's eyes, and it completely manages to suck you in. Once you start reading, the events that gets unfolded one by one starts to grab your whole attention.
However, the story doesnt focus solely on magic. As touma's point of view, it's more about espers. But the magic elements are mentioned, always hidden here & there.
The novel has strong set of supporting characters as well.
Touma, Accelarator, railgun, index and other characters have their specific charm in this story making it more enjoyable.
Touma is great protagonist overall.
The diologues. The diologues used in this are quite remarkable and perfect in their respective situation.
The narration & story execution is also pretty good.
The elements of science & magic are woven in the storyline pretty well. Plot twists are always there to blow your mind. It makes you feel anxious on what's going to happen next everytime.
* Cons : weak character development at the beginning. Only at the beginning because as the story progress, the characters grow on you and it's sorted out.
The story is not flawless as well. It has it's flaws but not enough to turn you away from reading it.
* Overall : 8/10 (very good)
A great read. Really enjoyed it. those who like to read are definately going to like this.
